MUDr. Stanislav Grof je psychiatr s více než 60 letou praxí ve výzkumu neobyčejných stavů vědomí a jeden ze zakladatelů a hlavních teoretiků transpersonální psychologie. Narodil se v Praze, kde také získal své vědecké vzdělání: dosáhl titulu doktor medicíny na Lékařské fakultě Univerzity Karlovy a Ph.D. (doktor filozofie v medicíně) na Československé akademii věd. Získal také čestné doktoráty Ph.D. stupně z Vermontské univerzity v Burlingtonu, z Institutu transpersonální psychologie v Palo Alto v Kalifornii a ze Světové buddhistické univerzity v Thajském Bangkoku.
Prvotní výzkum MUDr. Grofa o klinickém využití psychedelických látek byl proveden na Ústavu psychiatrického výzkumu v Praze, kde byl hlavním výzkumným pracovníkem programu, který systematicky zkoumal heuristický a terapeutický potenciál LSD a dalších psychedelických látek. V roce 1967 získal stipendium od Fondu nadace pro výzkum v psychiatrii v New Haven v Connecticutu a byl pozván jako klinický a vědecký pracovník
na Univerzitu Johnse Hopkinse a výzkumné oddělení nemocnice Spring Grove v Baltimore, Marylandu.
V roce 1969 se MUDr. Grof stal zastupujícím profesorem psychiatrie na Univerzitě Johnse Hopkinse a pokračoval ve své práci jako vedoucí psychiatrického výzkumu v psychiatrickém výzkumném středisku v Marylandu v Catonsville. V roce 1973 byl pozván jako hostující přednášející do Esalenského institutu v Big Suru v Kalifornii, kde se svou dnes již zesnulou manželkou Christinou Grofovou vyvinul holotropní dýchání, inovativní formu experimentální psychoterapie, které se dnes používá po celém světě.
MUDr. Grof je rovněž zakladatelem Mezinárodní transpersonální asociace (ITA) a několik desetiletí působil jako její prezident. V roce 1993 obdržel čestné ocenění od Asociace pro transpersonální psychologii (ATP) za průkopnickou roli v historii vědního oboru transpersonální psychologie, která mu byla udělena při příležitosti 25. výročního shromáždění v Asilomaru v Kalifornii. V roce 2007 získal prestižní ocenění VIZE 97 za celoživotní úspěchy od nadace Dagmar a Václava Havla v Praze. V roce 2010 také obdržel ocenění Thomase R. Vernyho od Společnosti pro prenatální a perinatální psychologii (APPPAH) za stěžejní přínos k rozvoji této oblasti. Byl také pozván jako konzultant pro speciální efekty ve sci-fi filmu Metro Goldwyna Meyera Brainstorm a sci-fi filmu 20th Century Fox Millenium. Mezi publikace MUDr. Grofa patří přes 160 článků v odborných časopisech a mnoho knih, například LSD: Gateway to the Numinous; Beyond the Brain (Za hranice mozku); LSD Psychotherapy; The Cosmic Game (Kosmická hra); Psychology of the Future (Psychologie budoucnosti); The Ultimate Journey; When the Impossible Happens (Když se nemožné stane); Books of the Dead; Healing Our Deepest Wounds; Modern Consciousness Research and the Understanding of Art (Moderní výzkum vědomí a chápání umění); Beyond Death; The Stormy Search for the Self (Nesnadné hledání vlastního Já); Spiritual Emergency (Krize duchovního vývoje); a Holotropic Breathwork (Holotropní dýchání), (poslední čtyři společně s Christinou Grofovou). Tyto knihy byly přeloženy do dvaceti dvou jazyků: němčina, francouzština, italština, španělština, portugalština, holandština, švédština, dánština, ruština, ukrajinština, slovinština, rumunština, čeština, polština, bulharština, maďarština, lotyština, řečtina, turečtina, korejština, japonština a čínština. Od dubna 2016 je šťastně ženatý s Brigitte Grofovou. Žijí spolu v Německu a Kalifornii, cestují společně vnitřním i vnějším světem a pořádají semináře a workshopy o holotropním dýchání po celém světě.

Stanislav Grof, M.D., is a psychiatrist with over sixty years of experience in research of non-ordinary states of consciousness and one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where he also received his scientific training: an M.D. degree from the Charles University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine) from the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences. He was also granted honorary Ph.D. degrees from the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, and the World Buddhist University in Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. Grof’s early research in the clinical uses of psychedelic substances was conducted at the Psychiatric Research Institute in Prague, where he was principal investigator of a program that systematically explored the heuristic and therapeutic potential of LSD and other psychedelic substances. In 1967, he received a scholarship from the Foundations Fund for Research in Psychiatry in
New Haven, CT, and was invited as Clinical and Research Fellow to the Johns Hopkins University and the Research Unit of Spring Grove Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
In 1969, Dr. Grof became Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University and continued his research as Chief of Psychiatric Research at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center in Catonsville, MD. In 1973, he was invited as Scholar-in-Residence to the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, where he developed, with his late wife Christina Grof, Holotropic Breathwork, an innovative form of experiential psychotherapy that is now being used worldwide.
Dr. Grof is the founder of the International Transpersonal Association (ITA) and for several decades served as its president. In 1993, he received a Honorary Award from the Association for Transpersonal Psychology (ATP) for major contributions to and development of the field of transpersonal psychology, given at the occasion of the 25th Anniversary Convocation held in Asilomar, California. In 2007, he received the prestigious VISION 97 lifetime achievement award from the Foundation of Dagmar and Václav Havel in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 2010, he received also the Thomas R. Verny Award from the Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) for his pivotal contributions to this field. He was also invited as consultant for special effects in the Metro Goldwyn Meyer science fiction movie Brainstorm and 20th Century Fox science fiction movie Millenium.
